The
London Weekly Enquirer Despite the presence, in
Tewfpik, of a British-led force of over one thousand, well-equipped Egyptian soldiers,
nothing is being done to combat the depredations of the Dervish forces in that area of the
Sudan. The Dervishes, led by Osman Dogma, continue to raid villages within a few hours
march of the garrison of Tewfpik. I have visited such villages and seen the price of
British and Egyptian inaction. All food stocks are taken, the fit and able-bodied men are
impressed into the ranks of the Dervish army, and such women as take the fancy of even the
least important of the Emirs are dragged away to a fate that can only be imagined. And
what do the British and Egyptian Governments do? Nothing! |
