FIELD GUN JACK VERSUS THE BOERS - THE
ROYAL NAVY IN SOUTH AFRICA 1899 - 1900
by Tony Bridgland
Leo Cooper (1998) ISBN 0 85052 580 2
When the Boer War broke out, the British Army in South Africa was ill-equipped to deal
with the crisis. In particular they were short of artillery, and especially short of long
range artillery that could match the Boer 155mm Creusot Guns (better known as 'Long
Toms'). The immediate solution was available in the form of H.M.S. Terrible and H.M.S.
Powerful, a pair of large cruisers. The captain of H.M.S. Terrible - Percy (later
Sir Percy) Scott - dismounted both 4.7" and 12 pdr.
Quick Firing Guns from his ship and extemporised land mountings for them.
They were then despatched - along with their gun crews and supporting elements of the
Naval Brigade raised from amongst the crews of Her Majesties Ships in South African ports
- to various parts of the front to support the Army. This book tells the story of the
vital role played by these guns and their crews during the Boer War.

FLASHMAN series
by George MacDonald Fraser
Taking as his starting point the fictional character of the Rugby School bully in TOM
BROWN'S SCHOOLDAYS, George MacDonald Fraser has, since 1969, written a series of novels
about a Victorian military 'hero', Harry Flashman. Flashman is, in truth, a cowardly,
sneaky, womaniser who has no illusions about his own character - and this honesty is his
redeeming feature. The books are very well researched, and convey to the reader an
understanding of what an adventurous gentleman's life could be like during the Victorian
period. For a chronological list of the books in the series, press here.
