YOUNG WINSTON'S WARS - THE ORIGINAL DESPATCHES OF WINSTON S.CHURCHILL, WAR CORRESPONDENT 1897 - 1900
edited by Frederick Woods
Leo Cooper Ltd. (1972) ISBN 0 85052 128 9
Whilst on service on the North West Frontier, in the Sudan, and in South Africa during the 2nd. Boer War, Winston Churchill sent home a series of letters and despatches that were used by the 'Morning Post' and the 'Daily Telegraph' to help tell the story of those conflicts to their readers. Later he used them as the basis of his books THE STORY OF THE MALAKAND FIELD FORCE, THE RIVER WAR - AN ACCOUNT OF THE RE-CONQUEST OF THE SOUDAN, LONDON TO LADYSMITH and IAN HAMILTON'S MARCH (the latter two later being republished as the single volume THE BOER WAR). As a result this compilation of his letters and despatches covers familiar ground, but because they were often written in the immediate aftermath of action, they have an immediacy that is sometimes lacking in the books.

ZANZIBAR - SLAVERY AND THE ROYAL NAVY
by Kevin Patience
Zanzibar Publications (2000)
This privately published book tells the story of Royal Navy's attempts to suppress the slave trade along the East African coast. This culminated in the bombardment of the Sultan of Zanzibar's palace in 1896, an event that is often referred to as 'The Shortest War in History'. The book makes use of contemporary photographs, many of which seem to have come from private sources. It also provides lots of ideas for wargamers seeking scenarios based around the suppression of slavery.
