Solent Sea Forts

The sea forts built in the Solent are part of a chain of forts built during the middle of the nineteenth century around Portsmouth and Southampton. They were intended to defend this part of Britain's coast from a possible French invasion, and are often called 'Palmerston's Follies'. There are four such sea forts - No Man's Land Fort, Horse Sand Fort, Spitbank Fort, and St Helen's Fort.
