Tilbury Fort Although originally built during the last quarter of the seventeenth century, Tilbury Fort was extensively modified during the 1860s to bring it up to date. Its new role was to act as a second line of defence behind Coalhouse, Cliffe, and Shornmead Forts, and as a compliment to New Tavern Fort in Gravesend.
