Tre Kroner Fortress

Construction of the Tre Kroner (Three Crowns) fortress was begun in 1786, but progress was slow, and when the Royal Navy attacked Copenhagen in 1801 and 1807 it was still unfinished. Funds were finally made available to complete the fortress in 1828. It was upgraded during the nineteenth century, when further batteries and casemates were added, the latter being constructed from 1864 to 1869 in concrete - the 'new' building material.
